Tips For Purging Your Closet

Leaves are changing, pumpkin spice is taking over everything from beverages to yarn colors, and of course, you are starting to don those well-loved sweaters once again.

That means it’s the perfect time to reorganize your closet, starting with purging!

The change of seasons is the perfect time to look at the clothes of the season you just came out of while taking note of the clothes you have for the season you are entering. Why? Getting rid of clothes is hard and it only makes it harder when “ifs” squeeze their way in. “What if I wear this next summer or what if this fits in the winter etc. etc. If you purge the clothes that belong to the season you just left behind, you know what you wore and what you avoided! Now when you look at your summer clothes, you can more easily decide what you will hang on to and what you can let go of.

Following are some tips to follow as you take one last look at your summer clothes before they give way to long sleeves and fuzzy socks as well as some tips for those fall clothes that will be your everyday wardrobe for the next few months.

  • Gather all of your summer clothes together
  • Categorize them by color- you can make a pile of each color (I would recommend that you lay them flat one on top of the other rather than a bunched up pile, but whatever floats your boat is fine)
  • Take one pile at a time, look at each article of clothing and ask yourself if you wore it this summer (if the answer is no-donate) if it’s yes, then ask if you love it and plan on wearing it next summer. If the answer is no, donate; yes, keep
  • If you have room in your closet, store your summer clothes in a bin or basket high or low in your closet (you want to leave the most accessible space for the clothes you are currently wearing)
  • If you do not have room to store your summer clothes, keep them separate from your cooler weather clothes so you aren’t stuck looking for what to wear and passing by 10 summer outfits before you find something more fall appropriate
  • For your fall/winter clothes: hang them by color or type or both! For example: keep all the sweaters together, long sleeve shirts, jackets, etc. or just hang by color
  • Hang all of your clothes with the hanger backwards on the bar. Once you have worn that article of clothing, switch the hanger around. By the end of the cold season, you can easily see what you wore and what you didn’t and can donate those clothes that are still on the backwards hanger
  • Keep a “donate” bin/bag in your closet to put any clothes that you wear and decide you don’t want to keep any longer

And lastly, for those of you who have warm weather all year round, congratulations, I will be jealous in the middle of February.
